Slow Cooked Ham with Cider and Raisins

I was thinking recently about how Grandma's are SO good at cooking. They have had years of experience in the kitchen- and I'm talking about EVERY day- not once a week like we do now.

So, I decided to try to get some experience under my belt and have a go at making a ham when there ISN'T an audience- except for you :). While this ham experience was mighty tasty, I'm not sure I'd do it the same next time.

I was really going for a sweet ham WITH sweet gravy (I have a distant memory from Christmas one year of ham gravy with raisins which I was shooting for, but we didn't quite get there).

Here's the recipe how I'll do it next time:

1 fully cooked ham (about 10 lbs)
4 c. apple cider
2 t. dry mustard
1 c. brown sugar
1 t. ground cloves
1/4 t. allspice
dash nutmeg
1 c. golden raisins

Place ham in crock pot (4 qt.) cut side down. Pour cider over ham. Add remaining ingredients. Cover and cook for 6-8 hours.

For the gravy: Remove 2 cups juice and most of the raisins from crock pot, place in saucepan. Add a cup milk or water to thin it out. Bring to a boil. Add 4 T. flour and 4 T .water (premixed) stirring constantly. Reduce heat, continue stirring until thickened.

The ham was very good, but I thought the mashed potatoes were to die for!
