Ahh, the season of fresh food is here. Say goodbye to canned and frozen nonesense and hello to the good stuff. I always have to savor this season and the motivation to eat healthy because it never lasts long. But for a while there are tons of fresh fruits and vegetables around and I actually want to eat them!
I know I always talk about weird family food traditions but each season I remember more! When I was a kid we had a huge rhubarb plant in the backyard. We also had a large garden, but even after the thrill of tending to the garden had died, the rhubarb plant was steady. And yummy!
My favorite afternoon snack was a stalk of freshly picked rhubarb washed and dipped into a cup of sugar. Sort of like those sugar sticks that you dip of flavored sugar but twice as sour! It was like a warhead from the garden. mmm.
Another favorite was a whole tomato, sliced and covered with a fine layer of sugar. Yes sugar again. Not salt, gross. I learned this trick from my Papa who says, “That’s how we all used to eat tomatoes up north” in a mix between an Ozarks and faded Minnesota accent. Its the best, seriously. And if you are watching the empty carbs, Splenda works just as well.
Come the think of it, I had that yesterday but didn’t take a picture of it. I’ll just wait until I have my own tomatoes to photograph. Won’t be long!
